DEATHS ARE POSSIBLE MURDER-SUICIDE
A Taylorsville man and his mother were found shot to death in their Taylorsville home Saturday morning. Investigators found a gun in the home that they believe to be the weapon that killed 72-year-old Saundra Harter and 51-year-old Greg Thomas. Investigation in the deaths is ongoing, though officials believe it was murder-suicide.

SEYMOUR MAN CHARGED WITH CHILD MOLESTING
A Seymour man is facing child molesting charges after a 13-year-old girl reported an incident to a school counselor. 37-year-old Richard Blocker allegedly molested the girl three years ago while she was at his home. Blocker is being held in the Jackson County Jail.

TWO ARRESTED AFTER INDOOR GROWING OPERATION FOUND
Two people are facing drug charges after police found an indoor marijuana growing operation in a Seymour apartment. 32 marijuana plants and growing equipment were found inside the apartment. 31-year-old Michael Brooks and 35-year-old Aimee Bernstein were arrested on several charges including cultivating, dealing, and possession of marijuana.  More arrests are expected.

METH LAB INCIDENTS UP IN 2009
Indiana State Police are reporting a rise in methamphetamine activity for 2009. Statewide lab incidents were up nearly 27 percent in the last year. Bartholomew County had the 7th highest number of lab incidents at 59, Jennings County had the 3rd highest number with 81 and Decatur County was 4th with 78. Law enforcement officials attribute the rise in lab discoveries to greater public awareness of meth production.

BCSC BOARD TO MEET MONDAY
At their meeting tonight Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation Board will consider a change of policy allowing students increased internet access. The policy change would continue to block obscene and harmful sites from student use. The board will meet at 7:00 at Smith Elementary

 

SIGN YOUR NAME TO FINAL COMMONS BEAM
Next week the Columbus Community will have an opportunity to sign their name on the last steal beam to be added to The Commons. The 30 foot beam will be lying on Jackson Street, between the new Cummins Office building and the Sears store.  You can sign the beam on Thursday from 4 to 6 or on Friday from 10a.m. to noon.

SCHNECK TO OFFER PROGRAM EXPLORING MEDICAL CAREERS
Schneck Medical Center has announced a new program for high school students interested in exploring various medical careers. The program offers participants the opportunity to learn more about the many different areas of healthcare and how to prepare for a future in the field. For more information visit www.schneckmed.org

CHIP GRANTS OFFERED TO CITY HOMEOWNERS
The Columbus office of Community Development offers Home Improvement grants to qualified city homeowners.  Grants are available to repair or replace heating systems, air-conditioners or roofs.  Applications are available at the Office of Community Development located at City Hall. Funding is made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.For more information www.columbus.in.gov
  

SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED
Local not-for-profits involved in the annual school supply assistance project are scrambling to replace school supplies lost in the United Way fire. Diane Doup with Lincoln Central Neighborhood Family Center says they estimate that around 11 thousand dollars worth of school supplies were lost. Donations can be made at San Souci. Please note on checks that the funds are for school supplies. 

BATMAN PRODUCER TO VISIT FRANKLIN
The originator and executive producer of the Batman movies Michael Uslan will visit Franklin as part of the Franklin College 175th Anniversary lecture series. Uslan will share the principles that allowed him to persevere despite repeated rejection and encourage attendees to reach for their dreams and believe in themselves. The lecture is free and no ticket is required to attend, although seating is limited.

COLUMBUS ARTFEST 2010

HOSPICE OF JENNINGS CO. GALA BENEFIT DINNER AND DANCE
Hospice of Jennings County will hold their 12th Annual Gala Benefit Dinner and Dance on February 13th.  The Gala will be held at St. Mary’s Parish in North Vernon, Indiana and will feature dinner, dancing and silent and live auctions.  Cost is $25.00 per person or $45.00 per couple.  For more information please call Hospice of Jennings County.

FINANCIAL AID HELP AT IVY TECH
IUPUC and Ivy Tech Community College will host  a free financial aid workshop for IUPUC, Ivy Tech and Purdue College of Technology students.  On February 21st at 2:00 at Ivy Tech, Financial aid experts will help those in attendance complete the FAFSA form. Attendees should bring their FAFSA pin number, 2009 tax returns or W-2’s, and other tax information.

SEYMOUR MAIN STREET SEEKING VENDORS
Vendors are being sought for the Seymour Main Street Lawn, Garden and Patio Show set for Saturday, May 15, at the Robertson Feed Mil Parking Lot.  All types of lawn, patio, home and garden supplies will be displayed and sold at the event. If you are interested in setting up a booth please contact the Jackson County Visitors Center.

SCHNECK NOW ACCEPTING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
Schneck Medical Center is now accepting applications for two scholarships. The Dr. "Bud" Scholarship is for students pursuing a course of study to become a registered nurse and have successfully completed their freshman year of registered nursing program. The George H. James, Jr. Scholarship is for students enrolled in medical school. Applications can be found at schneckmed.org and must be returned by March 15th.

APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR YMAA
The deadline to apply for the 2010 Youth Memorial Art Award is February 11. Bartholomew County Students in grades 7-12 can submit one piece of artwork to be judged for the award.  The winning artist will receive a $250 purchase prize.  Applications are available online at artsincolumbus.org

APPLICATIONS FOR UNITED ARTS FUND OF COLUMBUS AVAILABLE
Applications are now being accepted for the grant categories awarded through the Indiana Arts Commission and the United Arts Fund of Columbus. Applications are available for download at the “Region 9” page of the Columbus Area Arts Council’s website artsincolumbus.org. They must be returned April 1st
