SEYMOUR, Ind. - UPDATE: Authorities say the deceased in the Saturday evening accident is a 12-year-old from New Albany. There were four vehicles involved in the crash: a semi, a pickup, and two cars. The child was in the backseat of one of the cars. Three others in that car were airlifted to area hospitals.
Two occupants of the other car suffered minor injuries and were taken to Schneck Medical Center. No one in the pickup or semi was hurt.
Original: Indiana State Police (ISP) Sgt. Stephen Wheels said that troopers from the ISP-Versailles Post and other first responders were dispatched to a serious crash on I-65 at exit 50 in Seymour, at around 6 p.m. on Saturday. It was reported that one person died at the scene.
The accident occurred on the south side of the interstate. I-65 was closed in both directions at mile marker 51 so that a medical helicopter could land.
The State Police stated that a semi was involved in the crash, but in the early stages of the investigation, it was unclear how many other vehicles were involved.
The northbound lanes of the interstate reopened at 8 p.m., and the southbound lanes at around 8:45 p.m.
As the investigation continues, more details will be forthcoming from ISP and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
