UPDATE: Flood Warning extended until Monday for Driftwood River near Edinburgh

SOUTH-CENTRAL, Ind. – UPDATE, 12:30 a.m.: The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis has extended a second Flood Warning on Wednesday, March 4. The Warning is now in effect until Monday for several local rivers, including the Driftwood River

Minor flooding is occurring, and moderate flooding is forecast for Driftwood River near Edinburgh.

NWS says the Flood Warning was declared for the Driftwood River near Edinburgh, Flatrock River near Columbus, East Fork White River at Columbus, Big Blue River at Shelbyville, and East Fork White River at Seymour.

These rivers could rise above their flood stages on Wednesday morning, crest by Friday, and then fall below flood stage on Saturday.   

Between 2 and 4 inches of rain had fallen across south-central Indiana as of early Wednesday morning. This has led creeks to rise above flood stage, and area rivers will follow. Additional rain is forecasted over the next several days.   

One example: The flood stage for the East Fork White River in Columbus is 9 feet. The river is expected to rise above flood stage late Wednesday night to a crest of 10.9 feet by Friday afternoon. It will fall below flood stage on Saturday evening. 

Earlier, NWS issued a Flood Warning on Tuesday night for Youngs Creek at Amity in Johnson County and Haw Creek in Bartholomew County, near Clifford. It will be in effect until Wednesday, March 4, at 9:19 p.m.

Between 1 and 2 inches of rain had fallen by Tuesday at 10:40 p.m., and an additional 1 to 3 inches is expected over the area.on Wednesday. Creek levels were rising, and this trend will continue into the late-night hours on Tuesday into Wednesday, creating flooding of area streets and fields.

Late Tuesday night, Haw Creek was at 7.5 feet. Flood stage is 12 feet. It is expected to rise to 14.5 feet on Wednesday morning and then fall below flood stage on Wednesday afternoon.

At 14.5 feet, near major flooding is possible along Haw Creek.

Flooded roads could include County Road 450N, Rocky Ford Road, 10th Street, and Marr Road, according to the Columbus Response Plan.
