NORTH VERNON, Ind. - North Vernon Police Department (NVPD) Officer Christopher Allen received a Letter of Commendation, and Officer Nathan Gibbons was presented with the Indiana Life Saving Award this week for their actions during a critical incident on July 26, 2025.

While responding to a welfare check involving an individual experiencing a mental health crisis, Officers Allen and Gibbons determined the subject needed further evaluation. During the encounter, the individual produced a concealed weapon while alone with Officer Gibbons.

Officer Gibbons immediately secured the weapon to protect everyone involved, while Officer Allen used distraction techniques to assist in safely disarming the individual. Due to their calm professionalism, teamwork, and decisive actions, the situation was resolved without injury, and a life was ultimately saved.

NVPD recognizes both officers for their bravery, quick thinking, and unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the North Vernon community.
