GENEVA TOWNSHIP, Ind. - Deputies with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) and firefighters from the Scipio-Geneva Township Fire Department were dispatched Monday afternoon to the 1300 Block of Magnolia Place in reference to a residential fire.
While en route, they were advised that a neighbor had entered the residence, which was filled with flames and heavy smoke, and had saved an elderly man and woman.
Jennings County EMS treated the man and woman, who advised that their neighbor, Mike Anderson, had rescued them both. Anderson entered the home several times to locate and evacuate the two occupants. Both occupants were transported to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
JCSO Chief Deputy Cody Low stated, "We are very proud of Mike. If not for him, this may have had a far worse outcome. He is a hero today, and we are thankful for him."
There was speculation that this blaze may have been related to the fire in Geneva Township on Sunday afternoon. While both incidents are under investigation, it is not believed that there is any connection.
