I-65 wrong way crash near Seymour takes 3 lives; alcohol could be involved

SEYMOUR, Ind. - A two-vehicle collision involving a wrong-way driver claimed three lives on I-65 near Seymour early Sunday morning, August 23. Shortly after 2:30 a.m., a caller reported a head-on crash on southbound I-65 in Jackson County, about one mile south of Seymour. 

Responding officers quickly determined the accident involved fatalities and requested the Indiana State Police (ISP) Crash Reconstruction Team to investigate.   

The initial report determined that, for an unknown reason, a Jeep driven by Theosco Middlebrooks, 51, of Louisville, was traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-65, just south of the 48-mile-marker. 

The Middlebrooks vehicle collided head-on with an SUV driven by Alyssa Osborn, 31, of Scottsburg, that was traveling south in the southbound lanes.   

Both Middlebrooks and Osborn sustained fatal injuries. They were pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office. 

The one-year-old infant son of Osborn, Waylon Osborn, who was properly restrained in the rear passenger seat of the SUV, sustained critical injuries and was transported to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where he later died from his injuries.   

The investigation is ongoing. ISP investigators believe that alcohol consumption by Middlebrooks may have played a role in the accident. Toxicology results are pending.   

All southbound lanes of I-65 just south of Seymour were closed for approximately four hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
