Hope, Columbus fire crews fight massive barn fire

HOPE, Ind. - The Hope Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the area of Jackson Street and Aiken Street, just after 2 a.m. on Monday, June 15. While responding, Engine 11 observed significant flames and smoke in the area.

Upon arrival, crews found a large barn fully engulfed in fire. Firefighters initiated fire suppression operations while simultaneously protecting nearby structures, including the adjacent residence, from the spread of the fire.

The barn contained approximately 250 round hay bales, which presented significant challenges to suppression efforts. Due to the volume and density of the hay, an excavator was requested to assist with operations. Once on scene, the excavator was used to separate and remove hay bales, allowing firefighters to access hidden hot spots and complete extinguishment.

The fire was declared under control at approximately 7 a.m., and all fire units subsequently returned to service.

Because of the large volume of wet hay remaining on site, the debris pile is expected to continue smoldering for several days. The area will be monitored as needed to ensure conditions remain safe.

The Hope Police Department released a statement on social media advising nearby residents. It read, "Due to the overnight barn fire on the east end of town, it is highly recommended that if you have lung issues, keep your windows closed until the smoke dissipates. The barn was full of hay, and it will smolder for a few days."
