GREENWOOD, Ind. - The Greenwood Fire Department Merit Commission approved a motion on Friday, August 28, to expire its current firefighter eligibility list early, pending final approval from the city's Corporation Counsel.
The active hiring list, established on October 2, 2025, and originally set to expire in October 2027, currently contains 21 candidates.
Chief Jayme Washel noted that the department has already reached number 12 on the list and explained that candidates near the bottom often secure employment elsewhere before being called.
To ensure a fresh applicant pool, the department requested to dissolve the list ahead of its upcoming recruitment cycle. If Corporation Counsel confirms the move aligns with procedural rules and statutes, candidates on the current list will be invited to reapply through the new process.
