Custer Baker math teacher named Top 10 finalist for Indiana 'Teacher of Year'

FRANKLIN, Ind. - Franklin Community Schools announced Tuesday, August 11, that Custer Baker Intermediate School math teacher Amanda Ray, has been named one of the Top 10 finalists for the 2027 Indiana Teacher of the Year.

She was selected from educators across the state following a competitive selection process recognizing outstanding teaching, leadership, and contributions to the education profession.

Ray was previously honored as the 2026 Franklin Community Schools Secondary Teacher of the Year, a recognition that reflects the tremendous impact she has made on students, colleagues, and the broader educational community.

As a math teacher at Custer Baker Intermediate School, Ray creates a classroom environment built around the belief that every student is capable of meaningful growth, and she consistently finds innovative ways to help students see themselves as capable mathematicians and learners.

One example of Ray’s commitment to innovative instruction is her use of Building Thinking Classrooms, an approach that encourages students to actively engage in problem-solving, collaborate with their peers, and take greater ownership of their learning. 

Being named to the Top 10 for Indiana Teacher of the Year is another significant recognition of Ray’s commitment to students and to the teaching profession.
