Columbus Police launch safe-driving surge to reduce dangerous driving

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The City of Columbus and the Columbus Police Department (CPD) will run a month-long safe‑driving blitz throughout September to reduce dangerous driving behaviors and prevent crashes that cause injuries.

After analyzing past crash data, the agency identified several high‑risk areas. Increased patrols will focus on speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, disobeying traffic signals, and seat belt violations.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to public safety and the need for drivers to slow down and pay attention,” said Mayor Mary Ferdon. “We are seeing an increase in dangerous driving habits, which is leading to preventable crashes in Columbus, and immediate action is necessary.”

Police Chief Steven Norman said the department’s priority is to reduce dangerous driving, prevent injuries, and save lives. 

CPD officers will maintain a visible presence throughout the month and will engage with motorists to encourage safe driving habits.
