COLUMBUS, Ind. - Governor Mike Braun has nominated census tract 101 in downtown Columbus for the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Opportunity Zone (OZ) 2.0 program.

This federal initiative, part of the 2027–2036 cycle, offers capital gains tax incentives designed to drive private investment into designated communities. Pending Treasury certification, the designation will take effect January 1, 2027.

Columbus is one of 126 Indiana tracts selected following a state review of investment potential and community alignment. The updated OZ 2.0 framework builds on the original program's goal of revitalizing underserved areas by introducing stricter eligibility thresholds, enhanced accountability measures, and expanded support for rural communities.

City officials, including Mayor Mary Ferdon, celebrated the news as a major step forward for local growth. "This nomination recognizes the strong vision of our community," Ferdon stated, noting the city's intent to leverage the program to attract capital for housing and business development.

Jake Sipe, director of Community Development, added that the designation reinforces Columbus’ reputation for innovation. The city plans to continue collaborating with partners at the Bartholomew County government, the Greater Columbus Economic Development Corporation, and Visit Columbus to maximize the impact of this new opportunity.
