COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus Redevelopment Commission is advancing efforts to unlock hundreds of acres of industrial ground. Commissioners unanimously approved Resolution 20-2026, allocating up to $386,500 for Phase 2 of the Walesboro Airport Master Plan.
Columbus Airport Director Bryan Payne and Cherie Akers of Barge Design Group presented the next steps for the roughly 800-acre site. Phase 2 focuses on stormwater management, 2D hydraulic modeling, a market and economic study conducted in coordination with Phil Wagner of the Greater Columbus Economic Development Corporation, and securing a Conditional Letter of Map Revision (CLOMAR) through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Updated 2D modeling reveals the site's paper floodplain status can be mitigated, freeing approximately 400 acres for future industrial development. The project scope includes infrastructure layout, survey work, and environmental mitigation steps.
Agency review of the CLOMAR is expected to take 12 to 18 months once submitted to DNR.
