City of North Vernon acquires old Arvin downtown property

NORTH VERNON, Ind. - The City of North Vernon announced on Wednesday, July 1, the acquisition of the former Arvin Manufacturing property on South Madison Avenue, marking a significant milestone in the City’s long-term efforts to revitalize our downtown core.

For well over a decade, the City has identified the property as a key redevelopment opportunity. Located in a highly visible and strategic area within downtown North Vernon, the site has long been considered critical to supporting the City’s broader vision for economic growth and community investment.

The property also serves as an important connection point between downtown North Vernon and Tripton Park, creating opportunities to strengthen connectivity between two of our City’s significant destinations.

“This has been a priority for the city since I was first elected in November 2011 as the clerk treasurer, but prior efforts over the years to come to an agreement to purchase the property never came to fruition,” said Mayor Shawn Gerkin. “I made it a priority when elected mayor to work out the details to get the property purchased, and I’m thankful for the support of my colleagues to help get it done.”

The acquisition builds on a series of recent and ongoing projects in the downtown area, including the construction of the City’s new police station and Harmon Construction’s renovation of the former PNC Bank building. Together with additional housing and redevelopment initiatives, these projects reflect sustained momentum in North Vernon’s revitalization efforts.

City officials view the Arvin property as a cornerstone opportunity to enhance these investments, supporting long-term economic development and improving the quality of life for residents. Mayor Gerkin extends gratitude to the Marksberry family, current and past elected officials who assisted with buying this property, the North Vernon Redevelopment Commission, City Attorney Larry Greathouse, and community members for supporting North Vernon’s continued growth.

The City’s initial focus will be on site cleanup and preparation, positioning the property for future redevelopment. Additional details regarding long-term plans will be shared as they become available.
