COLUMBUS, Ind. – A local resident is in custody after crashing his vehicle in an apparent attempt to evade the Columbus Police Department (CPD).
In the early morning hours of Friday, December 6, a CPD officer observed a Dodge Challenger and a Ford Mustang driving on 25th Street traveling side by side. Believing the vehicles were racing, the officer tried to get behind them.
Before police could catch up, the Challenger turned off 25th Street and began driving at a high rate of speed, committing several moving violations.
Now on 17th Street with CPD still in pursuit, the suspect attempted to turn north onto Midway Street. The vehicle was going too fast to make the turn and slammed into a tree in a nearby yard.
Jaylen Flemmons, 25, of Columbus, was arrested. The two passengers were uninjured and released.
Officers allegedly found cocaine on him and a handgun near the driver’s seat. They also supposedly saw signs that the suspect was intoxicated and noticed an open beer inside the car.
Flemmons was booked for reckless driving (misdemeanor), operating a vehicle while intoxicated (misdemeanor), and possession of cocaine with a firearm (level 5 felony).
All charges are accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
