NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) says enrollment numbers for the next IHSAA Classification realignment could bring major changes for Jennings County teams in Volleyball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Baseball, and Softball.
In the next cycle, beginning this fall, the IHSAA is changing the system with which it divides the schools into different classes for tournament play. Jennings County High School (JCHS) fell in as the 86th biggest school, which means it will fall in with the new Class 3A group instead of Class 4A, which has been their grouping since 1998.
JCHS will no longer be in the grouping with their traditional Sectional 15 teams, which include Seymour, Jeffersonville, New Albany, and Floyd Central. All of those schools will remain in Class 4A.
New sectional opponents could include Madison, Greensburg, or Scottsburg. This means no more Boys Basketball Sectional play at the Seymour Fieldhouse where the Panthers have played in the sectional since 1971.JCHS Athletics can still petition the IHSAA to remain in Class 4A in any or all of those sports.
Asking that one sport move up to Class 4A does not require the other sports to move up also. Or JCHS can opt to keep all in the newly reformatted Class 3A and begin a new era in Panthers sports.
The final class assignments for the next two seasons will be released in approximately a month.
