SEYMOUR, Ind. – A Seymour woman was arrested after law enforcement says she thought police were going to take her child away, supposedly hitting an officer with her car in an attempt to get away.
The Seymour Police Department (SPD) responded to the 700 block of E. 4th St., on Thursday, regarding a family disturbance. During the incident, Rachel Blake, 21, of Seymour wanted to leave with her nine-month-old child.
Officers say they noticed that the car seat was not properly fastened and offered to install it for her correctly so she could leave. The woman allegedly became agitated and got into the vehicle, holding the baby in her arms.
Blake backed the vehicle up while police attempted to stop her and allegedly struck officer Sam Hughes, knocking him to the ground. The suspect then fled the area. A pursuit was initiated and subsequently ended after she crashed on US 31.
The young child sustained minor injuries and was transported to Schneck Medical Center, and later released to the care of the Department of Child Services. Officer Hughes was also treated and released from the Schneck emergency room.
SPD arrested Blake for criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, battery on a police officer, leaving the scene of an injury accident, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, and neglect of a dependent.
