COLUMBUS, Ind. – A local man is dead after an accident Thursday morning on State Road 46, near State Road 9.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office and Hope Town Marshall responded to the three-vehicle crash at 7:30 a.m. and located a man who had been partially ejected from his vehicle. The victim, Kevin Burton, 50, of Columbus, later passed away from his injuries at the scene.
Based on witness statements, it appears that an SUV being driven by Tammy Janes, 53, of Hope, was traveling south on S. R. 46 with Burton, in a pickup truck, following behind. Another SUV, driven by Tracy Toddy, 32, of Hope, was heading north and allegedly crossed the center line. Toddy’s vehicle hit the Janes SUV and then struck Burton’s truck. The pickup came to rest on its side with the victim trapped under it.
Toddy was flown north to IU Health Methodist Hospital for treatment of injuries. Janes was not hurt.
Law enforcement says the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
