NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The North Vernon Police Department (NVPD) has investigated three school-related threats in the last week, leading to the arrest of three students.
The first threat was on September 10 when a school resource officer was informed of a 6th grader who supposedly made a vague broad threat to the school body on a social media site. The threat reportedly referenced prior school shootings, and that student was arrested and removed from the school.
Also on September 10, a North Vernon School Resource Officer was informed that a 9th grader allegedly made a specific threat to two other students while in a classroom. The threat reportedly did not involve any of the other students or staff, and that student was arrested and removed from the school.
The final threat came Monday, September 16, when a North Vernon School Resource Officer was informed that an 11th grader apparently announced a vague threat overheard by other students while at school. That student was also arrested and removed from the school.
According to NVPD, in all three incidents, the suspect student was charged with a level 5 felony intimidation, and no evidence suggests that any of these incidents were coordinated. Police also say that they are aware of certain allegations stating that “hit lists” and videos depicting animal cruelty were discovered related to one of the threats, but no evidence has been found to support the claims.
School staff has been informed about all the incidents, and NVPD claims that school protocols were followed in each event.
