FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) received a tip last Wednesday that solved the recent overpass incidents where items were being thrown onto I-65 in Johnson County.
The first report was on November 9 at 9:15 p.m. when callers said individuals were throwing items off an overpass. Deputies found a large amount of baseballs on I-65. They were removed to ensure driver safety.
The second incident occurred on November 25 at 6:45 p.m. when the Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of people throwing rocks from the overpass at County Roads 250S and 600E onto I-65. A semi-driver reported that his vehicle was damaged.
During the investigation, JCSO detectives uncovered that the items being thrown—baseballs and softballs—had been stolen from a local Little League organization in Franklin. That led to interviews and the identification of three juveniles connected to the incidents.
The case is now being referred to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of potential charges. No other statements will be made until the Prosecutors Office has reviewed the cases. JCSO will continue to work with Prosecutor Lance Hamner and his team.
Sheriff Duane E. Burgess said, “This was a troubling incident which could have led to serious injuries. We were fortunate that no one was hurt. Our team’s swift and thorough work demonstrates the dedication of our officers to ensuring public safety and holding those responsible accountable.”
