CARMEL, Ind. – As is standard procedure for the Carmel Police Department, the Carmel Chief of Police has asked the Indiana State Police to investigate an officer-involved shooting incident involving a Carmel Police Officer that took place Sunday evening.
Carmel Police Dispatch received a 911 call at around 7:45 p.m. about a possible stalking incident in the 12800 block of Old Meridian Street in Carmel. An officer arrived and began searching the area for the man who was allegedly harassing the caller. Police received a description of the man along with his vehicle description.
At around 8:15 p.m., the suspect’s car was located on the third floor of the apartment parking garage. An officer parked his police vehicle in front of the car which an adult male occupied. The officer exited his vehicle and ordered the man to get out of his car. Police say he was not compliant with commands. Another officer arrived and the suspect still refused to exit.
The man then drove forward and struck a Carmel Police SUV several times. One officer fired shots from his issued handgun through the windshield of the suspect’s car. After breaking a window to gain access, the suspect was pulled out and handcuffed by law enforcement.
Once out of the vehicle, officers discovered the man had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, so police rendered emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived.
The suspect was transported to an area hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. One officer received a cut to the hand and required medical treatment at a hospital.
Indiana State Police detectives and crime scene investigators responded. The investigation is ongoing.
The involved Carmel Police Department officer was placed on critical incident leave pending an internal review.
