SEYMOUR, Ind. – Indiana State Police (ISP) detectives arrested a former Jackson County Auditor on several charges of fraud, theft, and official misconduct on Friday following a month-long investigation into misconduct allegations that occurred while she was the auditor.
The inquiry began in April when Indiana State Board of Accounts investigators discovered possible misconduct by then-auditor Staci Eglen, 44, of Seymour.
Detectives allege that Eglen altered two invoices for goods and services and then submitted them to the Jackson County Treasurer’s Office for reimbursement. They say she subsequently deposited the checks issued by the Treasurer’s Office into her personal bank accounts.
Eglen is also accused of receiving at least two checks from the Treasurer’s Office that were issued to her to be used officially as an employee of the Hamilton Township Trustee’s Office. She supposedly deposited them into her personal bank account and received cash that was used for personal purchases.
ISP says the suspect allegedly obtained over $18,000 illegally from the county through fraud and theft.
The case was presented to a special prosecutor and as a result of the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Staci Eglen on charges of four counts of official misconduct (Level 6 Felony), four counts of theft (Level 6 Felony), and two counts of fraud (Level 6 Felony).
She was arrested Friday afternoon without incident and incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail, pending an initial appearance in the Jackson County Circuit Court.
Eglen resigned auditor position soon after the investigation into these allegations began.
