NORTH VERNON, Ind. — North Vernon Redevelopment Commission President Greg Hicks and North Vernon Heritage Estates, LLC representative Josh Peters executed the final documents necessary to begin selling lots in Heritage Estates with North Vernon Mayor Shawn Gerkin in attendance on Monday, March 18.
The documents were recorded that afternoon, making lots officially available to purchase for single-family homes. Heritage Estate is a 111-lot subdivision on Old Hwy 50 near Jennings County Middle School and High School.
Jennings County paired with Bartholomew and Jackson Counties to form the South-Central Indiana Talent Region to compete for funds when Governor Eric Holcomb announced a $500 million READI initiative in 2021. The region was awarded $30 million.
One of the projects presented was what is now known as Heritage Estates. The Indiana Economic Development Commission awarded the city $3.1 million from the grant award for infrastructure for the subdivision.
This award, combined with a local match from the North Vernon Redevelopment Commission, solved the gap funding problem, and construction on the subdivision started in the fall of 2023 following months of planning.
