NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The North Vernon Police Department (NVPD) on Sunday evening responded to a personal injury crash involving a vehicle and a male bicyclist in the area of N. State St. just north of the intersection of Walnut St.
Officers arrived at around 9 p.m. and began rendering emergency aid to an adult male who was lying unconscious, but breathing, on the pavement.
After reviewing reports from witnesses and the driver, the investigation indicates that a car driven by Tyler J. Wells, 19, of Commiskey, was traveling south on N. State Street when it struck a male on a bicycle, causing the man to roll over the top of the vehicle and land on the roadway. The investigation further revealed that the bicyclist was likely intoxicated by alcohol.
The man, who remains unidentified, was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where he is reported to be in critical condition. Wells did not suffer any injuries as a result of the collision.
All lanes of N State St. were shut down for approximately 45 minutes. This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with further information is urged to contact NVPD at 812-346-1466.
