SOUTH-CENTRAL INDIANA – Indiana State Police (ISP) troopers were busy Tuesday morning chasing down suspects in vehicles in two separate pursuit incidents.
A stolen Dodge Charger, driven by Nicholas N. Lewis, 20, of Indianapolis, led troopers and officers from multiple agencies on a pursuit that started at around 7:30 a.m., on southbound I-65 near Seymour. The chase ended on US 31 in Scott County when Lewis crashed into the back of a Crothersville Police vehicle before fleeing on foot.
He was soon caught, arrested, and jailed in Scott County for three felonies: Battery to a Public Safety Officer with a Vehicle, Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, and Receiving Stolen Property. Three misdemeanor charges included: Resisting Law Enforcement on Foot, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Criminal Recklessness with a Vehicle.
In the second incident just after 10:30 a.m., a pursuit of another stolen car on northbound I-65 in Jackson and Bartholomew Counties led to the arrest of a suspect on several charges.
ISP attempted to pull over a Ford Escape for a traffic violation near Seymour. Instead of stopping, the driver, Dontrall J. Smith, 28, of Fort Wayne, accelerated and continued toward Bartholomew County.
The vehicle eventually stopped in the median, near the 58-mile marker. Smith was taken into custody without further incident.
During the investigation, it was determined that the Ford Escape had been stolen in Tennessee earlier in the morning.
Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Jackson County Jail where he was preliminary charged with Resisting Law Enforcement in a Vehicle, Possession of Stolen Property, and Reckless Driving.
