BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Bob Knight, who defined basketball in Indiana for nearly three decades and catapulted the Indiana University men’s basketball program to consistent national prominence during his tenure as head coach, died on Wednesday, his family announced.
It is with heavy hearts that we share that Coach Bob Knight passed away at his home in Bloomington surrounded by his family. We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as Coach requested a private family gathering, which is being honored. We will continue to celebrate his life and remember him, today and forever as a beloved Husband, Father, Coach, and Friend.

The singular personality coached the Hoosiers from 1971 until 2000, winning three national titles in 1976, 1981, and 1987. From the 1974-75 to 1975-76 seasons, the Hoosiers won 63 of 64 games and finished the latter season perfect at 32-0. He finished his career with a 902-371 record with stops at Army, Indiana, and Texas Tech. Knight also won a gold medal coaching Team USA in the 1984 Olympics.
Known for his charisma, motion offense, defense-first, and discipline-oriented, brash approach, “The General” exemplified a basketball-loving tradition that permeates to this day.
