COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department (CPD) apprehended a man on several charges after he tried to escape arrest on Saturday morning.
Officers tried to stop Todd Bergeron, 45, of Columbus, in the 3100 block of North National Road, at around 12:40 a.m. According to CPD, the suspect fled on foot and was caught in the 2700 block of Central Avenue. Police allegedly found suspected fentanyl, several Clonazepam pills, and methamphetamine after arresting him.
The Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET) and Intelligence Led Policing Unit have been investigating Bergeron’s criminal activities for about 18 months. He was a target of a previous investigation that led to a search warrant being executed by SWAT on a residence in the 1400 block of Lafayette Avenue last month.
The most recent interaction with Bergeron was on September 12 after he committed traffic violations on a bicycle in the 1400 block of Lafayette Avenue. While fleeing from law enforcement, he allegedly began discarding items including a small backpack, per CPD. The man was not located. Suspected fentanyl, fentanyl paraphernalia, and his ID card were supposedly found in the backpack.
On September 15, a warrant was issued for his arrest stemming from his actions on September 12. The arrest warrant was for Possession of a Narcotic Drug (fentanyl) as a level 6 felony, Resisting Law Enforcement as a Class-A Misdemeanor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Bergeron was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail and remanded on the Bartholomew County felony arrest warrant, along with new preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement, Possession of a Narcotic Drug, and Possession of Meth.
