SELLERSBURG, Ind. — Detectives with the Indiana State Police (ISP) in Sellersburg are investigating a police-involved shooting after a female suspect reportedly fired multiple shots from her residence and then retreated into her suburban home.
At around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, neighbors called 911 and said that they heard gunshots coming from a residence on the 200 block of Liam Noble Circle in Sellersburg. When Sellersburg City police officers arrived, they heard gunshots coming from the back side of the residence. They contacted the female homeowner, Lori Lynn Carpenter, 52, however, she closed the garage door on the officers and refused commands to put down any weapons and exit the house, according to law enforcement.
Officers later saw the suspect walking on the back deck of the home with a handgun in her hand. Based on the suspect’s actions and speech, they believed her to be intoxicated. Crisis negotiators with the Indiana State Police and the Southeast Regional Swat Team arrived to assist. Still, the suspect continued to disobey orders to put down the weapon and exit the house. Negotiators and officers also say she repeatedly broke contact with them.
Police used a variety of methods to contact and observe the suspect, including a loudspeaker, telephones, and a drone-mounted camera. After law enforcement could not reconnect with Carpenter, SWAT members attempted to open a door into the residence. The suspect allegedly fired through the door at police.
At least one officer from SWAT returned fire and struck the suspect. Officers immediately provided medical aid and transported Carpenter to the University of Louisville Hospital, where she is listed in critical but stable condition following surgery.
No officers were struck or injured during the incident. No other injuries or damage to surrounding houses were reported. Consequently, an arrest warrant has been issued for Carpenter on three separate counts of attempted murder. Bail was set as $100,000 cash. This case is still under investigation by ISP.
