COLUMBUS, Ind. – Bartholomew County Emergency Management (BCEM) is alerting area residents of the potentially dangerous and very high temperatures that are predicted for the next several days.
The National Weather Service (NWS) says a Heat Advisory is in effect for Tuesday, August 22. Temperatures will be in the 90s with Heat Indexes over 100 degrees.
For Wednesday and Thursday, NWS has issued an Excessive Heat Watch with a Heat Index that could reach up to 110 degrees. BCEM says there is no rain in the forecast for Tuesday through Thursday.
Heat Safety Tips for Humans:
- Make sure to hydrate – drink plenty of water or sports drinks
- Protect – Wear light clothing, use sunscreen, and wear sunglasses
- Plan – Schedule outdoor activities in cooler parts of the day, and take frequent breaks
- Monitor – Check on young children, the elderly, and pets
Animal Safety Tips:
- Animals can die of heat stroke within 15 minutes
- Cracking the windows does not help, the inside of a vehicle still gets dangerously hot
- During hot weather, keep your pets at home
