COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Humane Society has started the Jackie Kleine Watts Memorial Fund to raise money to provide special care for senior (7+ years) animals. The 2023 goal is $12,000.
In March 2017, Jackie Watts, age 33, tried to rescue a blind, elderly poodle from traffic and return the dog to its home. She ran after the scared animal until they both reached the banks of Flat Rock River, which was swollen from recent rain. Despite her selfless efforts, both she and the dog got caught in the rushing water and drowned.
Because Jackie was active in many groups that cared for animals, the Bartholomew County Humane Society has set up in her memory a special medical fund for older animals that need extra care at the society’s shelter.
Some of the needs and issues of the senior animals include:
- Diagnostic blood tests and x-rays
- Heartworm testing and treatment/prevention
- Teeth cleaning and other dental needs
- Eye problems
- Skin problems
- Obesity/malnutrition
- Heart and other systemic correctable problems
