INDIANAPOLIS – UPDATE: Indiana State Police (ISP) detectives continue to follow leads in the County Line Road/I-65 shooting. They are currently looking for a silver or gray sedan-style car with dark-tinted windows.
ISP is still seeking more information from witnesses who were in the area of I-65 and County Line Road or were traveling on I-65 southbound near County Line Road on Wednesday, January 11, between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m.
Investigators believe the incident began as a road rage encounter that led to gunfire. The road rage is believed to have been initiated on southbound I-65, north of County Line Road.
The victim was identified by the Johnson County Coroner as Richard Hamilton, 43, of Indianapolis.
ORIGINAL: First responders in Greenwood were called to County Line Road near I-65, on Wednesday at around 6:30 p.m., after receiving reports of a person being shot. The Greenwood Police and Fire Departments were first to arrive, and they found an adult male in the passenger seat of a white van who was unresponsive.
The man had an injury consistent with a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene by personnel from the Johnson County Coroner’s Office. There were no other people known to be injured in this incident.
Preliminarily, it is believed the van in which the victim was riding was targeted by occupants of another vehicle as they exited northbound I-65 to County Line Road. It is unknown at this time how many shots were fired or the exact motive of the crime. The suspect or suspects were thought to be inside a silver car. The victim’s van was described as a white “work van.”
Indiana State Police detectives are asking motorists with dash cameras, who were in the area of I-65 and County Line Road in Greenwood between 6:20 and 6:30 p.m. on January 11, to review their cameras and contact them at 317-899-8577 if they see any suspicious activity.
