COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) is investigating the cause of an early Wednesday morning fire in the 700 block of Hutchins Ave.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at around 4 a.m. after the homeowner was awakened by a “strange noise” and saw the glow of flames through a window, per CFD’s Capt. Mike Wilson. First responders found heavy fire in an efficiency apartment located at the rear of the house.
While a fire attack team fought the flames, other crews searched the building and determined no one was inside. The fire was under control in the 400-square-foot apartment in about 20 minutes.
Although the efforts of firefighters prevented the fire from extending to other parts of the residence, there was damage to the building’s structural components plus heavy smoke, water, and fire damage to the apartment. The total estimated loss to the property was set at $45,000, according to CFD.
The homeowner told investigators the apartment was recently vacated and the power and water were disconnected. No injuries were reported. The homeowner is displaced until utility repairs are completed. The Salvation Army is providing shelter to the homeowner. The investigation is ongoing.
