INDIANAPOLIS – A winter storm is expected later this week that could affect holiday plans in central and southern Indiana along with most other parts of the state.
A significant storm system is expected to move through south-central Indiana starting this Thursday and continuing through the weekend. The storm could include heavy rain, accumulating snow, high winds, sub-zero temperatures, and dangerously low wind chills.
The exact details of the timing and track of the system have not yet been confirmed, but the potential for dangerously cold air and high wind is apparent, according to Bartholomew County Emergency Management (BCEM).
Here is an early look at factors in which meteorologists have high confidence about the winter storm:
- Periods of high winds with a wind shift to the northwest Thursday into Friday
- Extremely cold arctic air this weekend with temperatures falling below zero
- Dangerous wind chills possibly down to -20F to -30F this weekend
- Periods of snow showers on the backside of the system Friday into Saturday
BCEM says areas of lower confidence about the approaching storm include:
- The exact track of the storm
- The specific day and time the storm will reach the area
- Snowfall amounts are uncertain but more snow is expected north and west of the low-pressure track
