COLUMBUS, Ind. – A 74-year-old man was arrested following a three-and-a-half hour standoff on Thanksgiving evening after he supposedly shot at his neighbor, The Columbus Police Department (CPD) said.
Officers went to the 6500 block of West State Road 46, at 7:15 p.m., after a report of shots fired. Jerry L. Lucas, of Columbus, allegedly discharged a gun at a neighbor who was apparently hit with shrapnel but not seriously hurt.
The suspect entered his home prior to police arrival and refused to exit, per CPD’s Lt. Matt Harris.
A short time later, the CPD SWAT Team, comprised of officers from the Columbus Police Department and the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) was activated, along with crisis negotiators. After the lengthy standoff, Lucas was taken into custody at approximately 10:50 p.m.
He was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was preliminarily charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. He remains incarcerated on a 48-hour hold.
Additional charges are possible in this ongoing investigation, according to police.
