VERSAILLES, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) and the DEA are sponsoring the 23rd nationwide “Prescription Drug Take Back” day this Saturday, October 29. The initiative seeks to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft through the proper disposal of prescription drugs.
Collection sites will be set up nationwide for expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs which will be disposed of without threat to the environment. This program is for liquid and pill medications. Vaping pens without batteries and vaping cartridges will also be taken. Needles, new or used, will not be accepted. This service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.
The program addresses a vital public safety issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion and misuse. Prescription drug abuse in the U.S. is alarmingly high, as is the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. A majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
“Drug Take Back” events are the safe and responsible way to legally dispose of prescription drugs with no questions asked. The event is this Saturday, October 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The closest ISP posts for dropoffs are:
- 902 S. Adams St., in Versailles
- 8620 E. 21st St., in Indianapolis
- 1500 N. Packing House Rd., in Bloomington
