GREENSBURG, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) is conducting an investigation into the death of a man who became unresponsive and later died after being in the custody of the Greensburg Police Department (GPD). GPD requested ISP conduct an investigation on October 10.
At around 9:15 p.m. on Monday, GPD went to a home in the 300 block of West 11th Street in Greensburg after a report of a man chasing someone with a garden tool, per ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.
When officers arrived, the suspect, Andrew Hill, 30, was no longer carrying the garden tool. As they spoke to the suspect, Hill allegedly attempted to strike one of them until the officer took Hill to the ground, according to GPD. Another officer then handcuffed the man.
Shortly thereafter, police noticed that Hill had become unresponsive. They began life-saving measures and requested emergency medical services, according to ISP. Hill was transported to Decatur County Hospital in Greensburg where he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy was performed Tuesday in Hamilton County, Ohio, and the final autopsy and toxicology results are pending.
The incident was captured on GPD body and dash cameras. The video footage has been obtained by investigators and is being reviewed as a part of the investigation.
