COLUMBUS, Ind. – Chip Orben, the local Government and Community Relations Manager for Duke Energy says the company has restored power to over 50,000 homes from the powerful winds and thunderstorms that moved through Indiana this weekend. Two waves of storms beginning Saturday broke numerous utility poles. They brought down power lines and interrupted power for more than 57,000 Hoosier customers, with 21,000 of those power outages in Bartholomew County.
Duke Energy has moved employees and contractors from its Ohio and northern Indiana service areas to supplement local crews and speed power restoration. The areas most impacted include Bartholomew, Shelby, Monroe, Morgan, Brown, and Decatur counties.
The hardest-hit areas around Columbus and Taylorsville may not have restoration until Monday at noon. As of Monday at 3:30 a.m., more progress has been made, as crews, contractors, and tree trimmers continue to work. In Bartholomew County, which started with over 21,000 residents out, just over 1,100 remain with no power.
The Saturday storms also resulted in the temporary closing of many roads in south-central Indiana.
