COLUMBUS, Ind. – 2:20 p.m. UPDATE: The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office continues to investigate the death of a teen who was hit by a vehicle while boarding a school bus on South Gladstone Avenue on Monday morning.
The female victim has been identified as 16-year-old Lily Streeval, of Columbus. According to County Coroner Clayton Nolting, she died of blunt force trauma to the cervical spine and chest.
1 p.m. UPDATE: After gathering witness statements and reviewing different footage of the hit-and-run incident involving an East student trying to get onto a school bus this morning, at this point in the investigation it appears the bus was stopped with the stop arms extended and the driver disregarded the stop arms, says the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).
The driver, later identified as Shiam Sunder Shankara Subramanian, 25, of 3224 Country Brook St., in Columbus, allegedly disregarded the stop arms, struck the victim who was crossing the street to catch the bus, and then he reportedly fled the scene. The suspect was followed by a witness and later became stuck in a yard, where he was located by BCSO and CPD, and arrested.
Subramanian was taken to Columbus Regional Health for a blood draw and then to Bartholomew County Jail and preliminarily charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death and reckless driving/passing a stopped school bus with arms extended causing death. Both are felonies.
