FOUNTAINTOWN, Ind. – The Indianapolis Fire Department says its HazMat Tactical Teams were requested to assist at the scene of a CSX train derailment last Thursday morning in Shelby County, on Division Street in Fountaintown. The initial crews that responded had reported possible hazardous chemicals leaking from one or more of the derailed cars and requested assistance.
The investigation found no hazardous chemicals, only used cooking oil and plastic pellets. There were no injuries. Area roads were closed for 12 hours for cleanup.
CSX had disentangled the rail cars by mid-afternoon. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. According to CSX, 13 of the 80-car train were part of the derailment.
Hundreds of homes and businesses had no power for several hours due to downed power lines.
