SEYMOUR, Ind. – The Seymour Police Department (SPD) responded Monday, at around 12:30 p.m., to a call for assistance at Schneck Medical Center from hospital security about a prisoner that had escaped from Jackson County Sheriff Office (JCSO) custody.
Officers learned that an SPD officer working security had cornered the man in a mechanical room accessible from the roof. When backup arrived, the suspect was secured.
Investigators learned that the suspect, Jackson Hatchett, 27, of Brownstown, was being released from the hospital, and was to be taken back to jail by a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) Correction’s Officer. While being discharged, the inmate overpowered and assaulted the officer, who received several injuries including a loss of consciousness from Hatchet strangling him.
The suspect barricaded himself in a third-floor bathroom, broke a window, jumped out onto a second-story roof, and then entered a mechanical room where he was soon caught and secured.
The injured Corrections Officer was treated at the Schneck emergency room and released. The inmate received lacerations to his arms and was also cared for at the hospital. He is again in JCSO custody.
Hatchett was arrested and charged with escape, battery with serious bodily injury, strangulation, theft, and criminal mischief.
