COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Fire Department (CFD) responded to 1107 8th St., after the report of a structure fire on Wednesday at 6:45 a.m. Crews arrived to find a fully engulfed detached garage located in the alley.
While there, crews noticed that a garage across the alley had also caught fire and directed a water stream to that building at 731 Union St. After the flames were quickly extinguished, the focus returned to the original fire which had reportedly spread to a car parked next to the structure. Temperatures were so hot from the fire that vinyl siding on nearby homes was melted before the flames were brought under control.
Firefighters subsequently learned that the detached garage building is a shared structure for the residents of both 1107 8th Street and 1111 8th Street, as a duplex apartment.
CFD says no injuries were reported and power was restored to homes. The investigation is ongoing.
