PLAINFIELD, Ind. – Duke Energy has announced it is planning to expand its campaign to protect customers from utility-impostor scammers.
According to Duke Energy, more than 880 of their Indiana customers have reported scam attempts since they began tracking reports in 2015. The company says that about 6% to 7% of those reports have fallen victim to the scams, losing a total of more than $26,500.
Duke Energy, a founding member of Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS), is reminding customers of tactics used by scammers to steal their money and providing tips on how to avoid the scams. Tactics that people should watch out for are threats to disconnect power, immediate payment demands with a prepaid debit card, or a mimicked interactive voice menu.
The best thing a customer can do, if he or she is suspicious, is hang up the phone and report the scam.
