COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Parks and Recreation Board met Monday morning and passed a resolution to take $67,800 from the parks department’s general fund to spend on two initiatives. It approved $45,000 for roof repairs at Hamilton Center and $22,800 for a study of all the city-owned trees comprising the Columbus tree canopy.
Former city arborist Kris Medic said the tree canopy study is part of a program to produce a workable tree ordinance.
Before the vote was taken, board member John McCormack suggested the study should be properly funded or shared by some other city department. Columbus Parks and Recreation Department director Mark Jones and city planning deputy director Melissa Begley said that as more aspects of the tree canopy project get underway, other departments would probably get more involved.
