COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) tried to make a traffic stop on a car north of West Lowell Road on U.S. 31 on Saturday. The vehicle was being driven by a 16-year-old juvenile who was weaving in and out of traffic.
The young driver supposedly almost hit multiple other cars while trying to avoid authorities at speeds in excess of 80 mph. During the pursuit, deputies say the passengers inside the vehicle called 911 stating the driver would not pull over to let them out.
BCSO says the vehicle turned west onto County Road West 500N at a high rate of speed, which caused it to go airborne and land in a nearby field. While the passengers remained inside the vehicle, the driver exited and fled on foot. He was located a short time later and taken into custody without incident.
Several bags of marijuana were allegedly found inside the car. The juvenile was remanded to the Youth Detention Center on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, criminal confinement, possession, and reckless driving.
The two passengers were released without charges.
