COLUMBUS, Ind. – The third Friday of September each year holds special meaning across the country as many come together to recognize and honor soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Over 82,000 military personnel are still unaccounted for since WWII, and on September 20, prisoners of war and soldiers who went missing in action will be remembered locally. The community will honor those soldiers at the Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans behind the Bartholomew County Courthouse, in downtown Columbus, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Retired U.S. Army Chaplain, Colonel Charles Hobert McDaniel Jr., will be the keynote speaker as he tells his story of his father’s remains returning home to Vernon last year after 68 years.
In addition to songs and an invocation, the ceremony will include a Rifle Volley and Taps by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
