SEYMOUR, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) responded to a report of a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Saturday around noon. The accident, on the exit ramp from Interstate 65 northbound to State Road 11 (exit 55), claimed one life. Officers found the driver, Ivan F. Hammond, 78, of Monclova, Ohio, deceased at the scene.
ISP investigators think the crash likely occurred sometime Friday, but the bike was not observed sooner due to the distance and location it was in relation to the roadway.
The initial investigation indicates that Hammond was traveling northbound on I-65 when he attempted to exit onto State Road 11. He was apparently traveling too fast for the exit and his motorcycle left the roadway and overturned. The victim was thrown from the motorcycle and he sustained fatal injuries. Hammond was wearing a helmet and other protective clothing at the time of the crash.
The investigation by ISP crash reconstruction team is ongoing. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be contributing factors.
