COLUMBUS, Ind. – SECOND UPDATE: Following a forensic autopsy, Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting has ruled the cause of the victim’s death to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
First update: The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office was contacted Thursday morning to investigate a man’s death after a caller reported hearing a single gunshot at the Interstate 65 northbound rest area, between Columbus and Taylorsville.
Coroner Clayton Nolting responded to the Columbus Regional Health Emergency Department, where the deceased man had been transported. According to Nolting, the victim is Alvin Wayne Bickell, 63, of Columbus. Nolting also says that an autopsy is being arranged, and more details will be released once it is completed.
Original Story: On Thursday around 6:25 a.m., Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) deputies responded to the report of a single gunshot fired in the area of a rest park in Bartholomew County. Upon arrival, they found one subject on the ground who was transported to Columbus Regional Health, where he was pronounced dead.
BCSO says that the public is not in danger, and deputies are not searching for a subject. More information on the incident will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
