Old Flames Can’t Hold a Candle to You

Our 5:40 Flashback featured Dolly Parton’s “Old Flames Can’t Hold a Candle to You” today on the KORN Morning Show.

Dolly, Dolly, Dolly (1980)

I requested the 35-year-old song specifically. Not because I’m Dolly fanatic, but because it was written by the mother of my all-time favorite pop star, Kesha!
Kesha and Pebe
Rosemary Patricia “Pebe” Sebert is a country songwriter from Brentwood, Tennessee, best known for this “first dance”-ish song picked up by Joe Sun in 1978. In 1980, Dolly released a cover and it shot straight to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles.
Pebe’s eldest daughter, Kesha Sebert (ya know, Ke$ha?) has released three official albums and topped international charts since her first single, “Tik Tok” …with the help of her talented songwriting mother, of course.

On Kesha’s recently released EP Deconstructed she recorded her own version of one of her mama’s most beloved accomplishments. Those Tennesee roots are really startin to stick out! (Warning: this one’s kind of a tear-jerker)

Sidenote: After completing a rehabilitation program for an eating disorder, Kesha recently announced that she’s dropping the “$,” making a fresh start, and taking a new direction with her music – under her actual name, Kesha Rose. <3
